What is Certified Lymphedema Therapy and Who Can Benefit?

Certified Lymphedema Therapy is a specialized form of rehabilitation that focuses on reducing swelling in the arms and legs. We help you manage and reduce swelling, improve comfort, and maintain limb health with personalized care.

Common conditions treated include:

  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency
  • Lymphedema
  • Lipedema
  • Arm or Leg Swelling
  • Post Surgical Swelling
  • Cancer Related Swelling

What's the Difference Between Lymphedema and Lipedema?

Category Lymphedema Lipedema
What is it? Swelling caused by buildup of lymph fluid due to impaired lymphatic system Chronic condition involving abnormal fat distribution
Who it Affects Men and women Almost exclusively women
Cause Congenital (primary) or secondary to surgery, radiation, cancer, trauma, infection Hormonal and genetic factors
Onset Can occur at any age; often after medical event Often begins at puberty, pregnancy, or menopause
Swelling Pattern Often one-sided (unilateral) Bilateral and symmetrical
Feet Involved? Yes, feet and toes commonly affected No, feet typically spared (“cuff” at ankle)
Stemmer’s Sign Positive (cannot pinch skin at toe) Negative (skin can be pinched)
Tissue Feel Firm, fibrotic over time Soft, nodular, “spongy” fat
Pain Heaviness or tightness; not typically tender early Painful and tender to touch
Bruising Not common Common and easy bruising

Important Differences in Lipedema:

  • Early-stage lipedema typically has normal lymphatic function.
  • As the disease progresses, the increasing adipose volume can:
  • Mechanically overload lymphatics
  • Cause microvascular dysfunction
  • Lead to eventual lymphatic failure
  • Making symptoms more difficult to manage if left untreated
  • Approximately 15–25% of patients with lipedema develop secondary lymphedema, particularly in later stages.
  • In Stage III–IV lipedema, rates of lymphatic compromise are reported to be significantly higher, up to 30–50% show evidence of lymphatic-insufficiency. The good news is that early intervention can make a significant difference. Early evaluation and appropriate treatment can help slow progression, reduce discomfort, and improve quality of life. Don't wait! If you’ve been diagnosed with lipedema or suspect you may have it, schedule an appointment with our specialists today.
